There is more we could say about Jesus Christ as an intermediary in the role of our Savior. We have discussed his office as a substitutionary sacrifice and as the one who reconciled humanity to God in himself by his sacrifice on the cross. However, in today’s article we are going to talk about Jesus Christ as our intermediary in his role as King.

It may not seem the office of kingship has anything to do with mediation. However, the agency of king is representative in the sense that the king personifies the body politic. In other words, the king is the people personified. Moreover, the people are found in the king as his kingdom. We see these very things in the relationship we have with our King Jesus.

First of all, Jesus is king, according to both the old and New Testaments. For instance, the Psalms talks about the rulers of the earth in futile rebellion against the Messianic king [Psalms 2]. When Pilate questioned Jesus about his kingship, the Lord Jesus affirmed his lordship [John 18:33-37]. Jesus also told his disciples the father had given him a kingdom and hey would be participants in it [Luke 12:32, 22:29-30].

The book of Hebrews has a lot to say about Jesus as high priest. Although this is not specifically speaking of his kingship, it has a bearing on the nature of our participation in him and in the kingdom of God. Time and again, the Bible tells us that we are in Jesus Christ [1 Corinthians 1:30, 2 Corinthians 5:17-19, Galatians 3:14, 3:26-29, Ephesians 2:6]. The scripture tells us that we put on Jesus Christ. This has to do with our being a new creation and putting on the new man. Thus, we have the people personified in the king - found in the king - as a kingdom of priests [1 Peter 2:5-9, Revelation 1:6, cf. Exodus 19:4-7].

In a way, this goes back to the beginning of this section about representation. Adam was created to be the reigning king of creation. He was supposed to be God’s vice-regent overseeing all God had brought into existence. Jesus, the last Adam, has made right what Adam had made wrong. Jesus is Lord of all creation, King of kings and Lord of Lords. He sits at the right hand of the Almighty and his enemies are placed under his feet. [Psalms 110:1, 1 Corinthians 15:25]. He does this as the representative King of his people. As is expected, those who are members of his kingdom, those in King Jesus, do the same. The Apostle Paul ended his letter to the Church in Rome, saying, and the God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you [Romans 16:20]. Indeed, like the, seventy sent out by Jesus, our Lord also says to us, I saw Satan having fallen like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will in any way hurt you. Nevertheless, don’t rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven [Luke 10:18-20].

Our Mediator, King Jesus, has given us the authority to trample our enemies. He has granted us victory over principalities and powers and rulers in high places. We have nothing to fear.
