Dear Lewiston

This article appeared in the July 23rd edition of the Lewiston Morning Tribune.

Dear Friend,

For some time now I've had it on my heart to write to you about some very important subjects. I'm not talking about issues that have importance only to me but of matters that concern the both of us - indeed, all of humanity. I guess you could say - if I die tonight - I want these to be by my "famous last words" to you.

At the outset, it is important you recognize the fact there is such a thing as absolute truth. If absolute truth does not exist then every opinion is equal and thus nothing can in fact be true. Ultimately, without absolute truth, the will of the majority creates "truth" for the rest of us. What I am sharing with you is not just my opinion or the opinion of the majority but is absolute truth.

Next, I must impress upon you the need to acknowledge the fact God exists and that He is the Creator of all things. If He isn't the Creator then it doesn't really matter if He exists or not. The only reason He has the right to intervene in the affairs of Mankind is because He is the Creator. In other words, God is not merely the organizer of pre-existing matter. Building a bookcase out of pine doesn't give me the right of ownership and control over the forest. If matter is eternal then God is nothing more than the guy who figured out a way to use it. That could happen to anybody, eventually.

There is something else I hope you will understand; people are not naturally sinless. God originally created Mankind in a state of sinlessness and gave him a set of rules to follow. But Adam, the first man, disobeyed the rules and plunged all Mankind into sin and separation from God. Since then, human beings have been born with a tainted nature and a natural tendency toward sin. No one can rid themselves of sin; no one can do anything in their own strength to please God now that they are by nature "children of wrath." Even though it is not politically correct so say so these days, I need to tell you that because of your sin you are destined for hell.

However, God didn't leave Mankind in His lost condition. Instead, He took on the form of a man (being born of the virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit), and did what Adam didn't do; He lived a life of perfect obedience to the law. This man Jesus was fully Man and fully God in a single person without any mixing of the two. He willingly died to pay for the sins of the world – for your sins and mine. He died to reconcile you to God. God can bring you into joyous relationship with Himself by giving you a new nature. A new nature – a new creation – enables you to place your faith in Jesus, submitting to Him and believing everything the Bible has to say about Him.

There is much more I could say but my space here is limited. I'll close by inviting you to get in touch with me if you would like to discuss this further.

Sincerely,

Chaplain D. Eric Williams
